Quotes

A couple of quotes that I discovered recently.

First off Tom Paine:

A thing moderately good is not so good as it ought to be. Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice.

I came across this in a piece about the argument going on at the moment about whether “new” atheists should be less vocal. Should moderation be one of the principles that guide dialogue between believers and nonbelievers?

Second, Darwin:

…from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

A beautiful one-liner about evolution if ever I heard one!

I like the longer passage your Darwin quote is from (the end of Origin of Species):

There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

Thought you might like this Einstein quote too (from Sagan’s Demon-Haunted World):

All our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike—and yet it is the most precious thing we have.

You’re right, the Darwin line is even better in context. Must remember to look up source of quote before using it…

The Einstein quote sounds just like something Sagan would say. Very good.
