Evolution (of the car)

A great little simulation of a simple evolutionary pattern is here. By combining random collections of triangles and wheels, selecting for the “best” in terms of distance run on a rugged surface, and letting the designs “mutate” slightly in each generation, you get to see some interesting modes of movement develop. Just letting the simulation run I’ve seen both “unicycles”, two and three wheeled cars develop. By playing “hand of God” and voting some designs up and down I’ve had mixed results – some evolutionary dead ends and a few really efficient vehicles. Left it running over night and had cars careening over my screen by morning. Wonderful.
